Adriaen van Ostade
Adriaen van Ostade(Dutch, 1610 - 1685)

Adriaen van Ostade became one of the great observers of everyday life in the Dutch Golden Age. A painter and etcher based in Haarlem, he is best known for lively genre scenes of taverns, village interiors, musicians, workers, and rural households.

His paintings often focus on ordinary people rather than grand historical subjects, yet they are rich with atmosphere and character. Through warm light, earthy color, and careful detail, Van Ostade turned humble rooms and crowded gatherings into vivid glimpses of 17th-century life. His figures can feel comic, rough, tender, or deeply human, depending on the scene.

Highly prolific, Van Ostade produced hundreds of paintings and many etchings during his career. His work remains valued for its storytelling, intimacy, and quietly theatrical view of daily life.
