Johannes Vermeer had a rare talent for turning the quietest moments of ordinary human existence into hypnotic masterpieces. Working slowly and meticulously in the town of Delft, he labored for months over single canvases, capturing gentle sunlight filtering into indoor rooms. Because of this painstaking process, his total lifetime output remained exceptionally small, with fewer than forty of his precious paintings surviving to this day.

While he was respected locally, Vermeer suffered severe financial hardships later in life and died leaving his family heavily in debt.
